"I Gave My Sole For Parkinson's"
Walkathons & 5K Runs

MPF's 11th Annual I Gave My Sole for Parkinson's in Northville and 8th Annual event in St. Clair Shores were our biggest yet! Over $100,000 was raised and 1300 people attended both days - Both are New Records! People felt energized and enthusiastic as they either ran 5K or walked the high school tracks. Even the weather cooperated. Thanks to the planning committees and 200 volunteers who helped to make the events so much fun and successful. Additional sponsorships, led by Presenting Sponsors Taco Bell and Gentherm, set the stage for a successful fund raising effort.

Fox TV helped tremendously in spreading the news with TV interviews, ads, and so importantly the participation of Reporters Ron Savage and Roop Raj who thoroughly engaged the attendees. Grosse Pointe Cable interviewed MPF's Founding Chairman Tom Cracchiolo (1983-1987) and out second Chairman, John Boll, Sr. (1987-1989) who spoke of the early years of MPF. Articles featuring Board Members, Judge Gail and Richard McKnight and Honorary Chair and Facilitator Ruth Butler appeared in major newspapers (Detroit News/Free Press - thank you Marnie Rich; and the Observer Eccentric Newspapers - thank you Mary Beth Dillon Butler) and focused on the very human aspects of living with PD. The Macomb Daily and C&G Newspapers also helped to spread the word. Don McLean, social media guru and volunteer head of MPF's marketing and PR efforts, managed MPF's Facebook page to help build the excitement of the days.

Most importantly, people affected by Parkinson's, their families and friends, whether or not they attend support groups, came in droves to the walk sites. They came in teams; they came as families; they came as individuals. One team, The Triumphs, brought a rebuilt green 1948 Triumph that Bill Hanke of Northville worked on in the 13 years since he was first diagnosed with PD. When he was 16, Bill rebuilt a Model A Ford, which he still has and building cars has been his passion ever since. Bill's daughter, Karen Tajer, says that she hoped this day and the family's involvement could be "all about Dad," and was touched by the positive energy and love they felt throughout the day. "My Dad shone."

The Eastside Fun Run, organized by Board Member Blake Johnson, drew more children under 12 years of age from South Lake Education District's 3 elementary schools. In Northville, Larry Bauer, the eldest son of MPF's Founding President, the late Dr. Raymond B. Bauer, sang "I'm Learning How To Smile," a song composed for people with PD that his father took to the support groups 30 years ago.

A special thanks goes to the two bands who volunteered their time and talents: The Shadows on the Eastside and Cosmic Groove on the Westside. The volunteer photographer was Subi Bhandari who did a fantastic job as you can see in the photos.

The connections of people over the years were strongly felt during these walks/runs, as people attend in honor or memory of a special person with PD. This is indeed a tribute to all the volunteers, people with PD, families and friends who attended. Join us next year at these locations, or in August in Alpena and September in Okemos. As one participant said, "It's not just a walk - it's a happening."
